They can tell if the previous animal was ill, and can even detect whether or not they were stressed out! What I feel is: Yes, they try observe anout the male-female and illness part but it is not safe for our pets to sniff other dogs urine or poop, we never know if it is through any infected dog or not. One of the worst infection is PARVO which virals due to sniffing infected dog's urine/vomit/poop.

Yes yes, parvovirus is really serious issue in dogs. Especially when taking out for walkies, take care your furbaby doesn't sniff anything that could be any dog's. Parvovirus is actually dangerous and is something of genuine concern.
