When should I trim paw nails of my 5mo Labrador Retriever puppy? He doesn't seem to need it rn, but few places I've read, the earlier the better. Because the quick outgrows. Is it true?

hey there! in my experience I've never trimmed Adore's nails, just once when she was a baby, but now it just automatically trims off due to friction on roads during walks. I guess that would be enough. even after that also you want to trim then i think the vet trims them off and it's better if we don't do so at home without prior experience.

I had trimmed my pet's nails when he was 5 months old cos they had become very pointy and sharp. But ever since then he hasn't been needing any more trimming cos he plays and walks around cemented floors which keep the nails trimmed. But I have seen a few pets of my friends and cousins who need regular trims cos they spend most of the time on tiles or marble and granite floors.

If you take Gadhu for walk regularly it would automatically trim down due to the friction on the ground
But in case if Gadhu mostly stays indoor
you need to follow this
A good rule of thumb is to trim your dog’s nails once they start touching the ground. Much like human nails, a dog’s nails will continue to grow and grow until they curl outward, or worse – inward. Long nails can be uncomfortable for your dog to walk on, they take away your pup’s traction making it easier for slips and falls, they’re more susceptible to breaking or tearing off completely, and they can grow into your dog’s paw pads causing pain and infection.

No, it can be trimmed out anytime after 4 months. You could use nail clippers according to the breed or nail size

You will know when it is time to clip them if they click when he walks on hard flooring. You can also tell by examining them, as the nails should not extend beyond the pad or scratch on the ground when he stands upright. If this goes on for too long, it can make walking painful.

Hi Ann, have you tried trimming yourself? It's so scary using these tools.

Oh wow, so maybe that's one reason why his nails aren't crazy big. Because of regular walks! Thank you thank you Ann 😊☺️

Thanks Ankita. Yes, I've noticed he feels more comfortable playing on cemented floors. Like our terrace, we were planning to change the flooring, but not anymore. This is actually good for Gadhu and hopefully some indie lovelies in future 😊☺️🤞

Thanks Rachna. Please share some things to keep in mind for first timers. Though I'll try only in presence of a groomer 😊

Ok Denita, done. I'll refrain. It's my first experience. Can't scare Gadhu, specially at this tender age. 😊 Thank you so much!
